Joe Soanes the twenty something musician has just had luck after luck after LUCK since being discovered in a little pub in Gorleston on the seaside in sunny old Norfolk. The Young star fresh off supporting Tenacious D (oh yes boys and girls) on their recent tour in the states is here with AMPLITUDE to give us his rise to fame story, tour stories and best of all his top ten albums he could not live without.
You’d think looking at Mr Soanes in the first place his was some acoustic easy listening kind of guy, well this awesome yet different kind of act he puts on is actually amazing, his acoustic renditions of metal classics are just the best and his own material isn’t half bad either.
“It was just such a serial day; it was just a normal Tuesday pub trip with me and my friends sitting in the mariners and we were actually discussing me writing songs I had been thinking of and stage names and all that…and it was really funny because some of the names they were coming up with where just awesome but anyway back to the story at hand… was just sitting there and suddenly some really well dressed guy came in and called out my name…he said Joe Soanes…is Joe Soanes in here I was like…well at first I ignored it because it could have been like an undercover copper but after a while one of my managers, Jason called him over and introduced us. Dean was an agent for some really small but popular record company and he had heard me sing the night before at the local ocean room club and was in his words, was hooked, and I guess the rest was just a happy blur of cheques and record deals and offers to play in clubs and concert halls.
I think the most important choice was keeping my friends close, like my two managers are still Shaun and Jason I mean those guys always believed in me and I’d always tease them about it… but seriously I would be no where without them so I kept them close…obviously I’m still living locally, but I am currently looking for houses in another country…but we’ll leave it at that and I haven’t forgotten who my real friends are who helped me achieve all I have now, so yeah I’m still your average 20 something, just with a guitar I guess”
Joe style has very much been linked to the works of Tenacious D and it was thanks to a Radio one Show where the two artists met which started their close friendship and thus leading to Joe supporting the band over the states and next year in this country
“I had been doing tiny gigs like over the country and it was me, Shaun, Jason briefly and Shaun’s girlfriend Danielle who at the time was doing wardrobe and set lists and all the technical crap, she really was a lifesaver on that tour, and all three of them came up to me in the van we were struggling shall we say around the country and yeah the three came up to me in the van and said they had got a call from BBC radio producers and they wanted me to do a stint on Zane Low….i was more than happy to take that offer up…but what I didn’t know was that tenacious D was going to be there…well when we got there and they were in the blue room I was like…well holy fuck really…excuse my French but it was just amazing to sit there and talk music with them and it was actually before the show where the guys heard me play some music and Jack was just like STOP half way through my song monkey shoulder and was like….you’ve got something and I want to use it abuse it…I want to mould it I don’t know but I want it to have a part in our show next month in the states. From there I guess I kind of blacked out from happiest and the actual show we did seemed a bit like a fuzzy dream really and from there got paid upfront flew in the plane still keeping my whole crew with me which now consisted of 7 people…yeah I know and had the most amazing month and a half touring with Tenacious D,
“I remember my first night….and I got complete stage fright…never had it in my life but I was playing to A LOT more people that night…like 5000 people….and I know to some bands that’s nothing to a 20,000 strong crowd but to me…it was hell. But I remember Shaun and Jason just trying to get me on there with so many different things I think eventually they said they would buy me my beers for the whole trip. So of course I took that offer up and went on stage and my act for the tour was not my own song but acoustic heavy metal covers with my drummer, Matt , Bassist Ian and Lead guitar when needed Ben and we for some reason had a very poor response to begin with but by the end we had the crowd going wild and singing along and it was just most likely the best gig experience ever because we conquered the states…even before we had conquered are own country…not a lot of bands can say that really…”
Joe’s new album “Fever” is out this week and Joe will be announcing tours in this country within the next week or so.
